There are a multitude of languages spoken throughout the world and there are numerous benefits of being bilingual, especially in the Global environment we live in. Being able to “bridge the communication gap between two people that speak different languages is one of my passions” Mehno said.

However, being fluent in two or more languages while impressive is simply not enough to be a professional qualified interpreter. To be able to become a qualified interpreter formal education is required. It is necessary to learn all different interpretation modes. “A good interpreter knows when to interpret in a consecutive or simultaneous way or do just a whisper interpretation,” Mehno pointed out. Additionally an interpreter that has been certified by the New York State Unified Court System shows a full command of both languages not only in day to day vocabulary, but also in technical vocabulary.

The New York State Unified Court System Court Interpreter Certification Examination is administered in two phases. Candidates must pass a 200 question written exam, half in English and half in the second language, in order to qualify to take an oral examination. The oral examination measures a candidate’s ability to accurately perform multiple interpretation tasks they would usually encounter in a courtroom situation. Veronica Mehno was certified as English into Spanish and Spanish into English interpreter and translator from Hunter College. However being certified by the New York Unified Court System “shows my commitment to my profession and my eagerness for excellence” Mehno stated.
